Consultation closes: 3 May 2026
The unplanned birth of an extremely preterm baby in an out of hospital setting is a challenging situation, even for experienced paramedics and ambulance clinicians.
Acknowledging the limitation of skills and equipment available, this consensus document offers a pragmatic approach to the management of unexpected extreme preterm birth in an out of hospital setting.
A document was written by a Working Group co-ordinated by the British Association of Perinatal Medicine and comprising experienced paramedic, midwifery and neonatal practitioners with expertise in pre-hospital care, emergency maternity care and resuscitation of the newborn; this draft was extensively revised following wide consultation.
Following feedback from our paramedic colleagues, and to avoid any confusion, the follow amendment has been made:
| Date | Page | Changes made |
| 26/5/2022 | 11 | 鈥淏aby crying - no respiratory support required鈥 changed to 鈥淏aby crying vigorously/making good breathing efforts - no respiratory support required.鈥 |
